Good morning and I hope you are enjoying your weekend so far. I don’t have much to share today except an article of interest or two and some expressions of gratitude for the past week!

Firstly, I am so grateful for the yoga studio that opened up a few blocks from my house. I’ve taken two Saturday morning classes there so far, and it’s been a huge pleasure for me to get back to a practice. Twenty years ago, I took yoga at a great studio in the Virginia Highlands area of Atlanta, and loved it. I haven’t done any yoga classwork since, and being able to re-engage my body in that area, in addition to running, is happy. I’ve also re-engaged with my meditation practice this week, using it in the mornings when I wake up to boost my confidence and gratitude, and at night to gear-shift into a safe space for sleep.

I’m also grateful for the right to VOTE in the Michigan primaries this week. There was record turnout and a remarkably diverse Democratic ballot. In the gubernatorial race, we had a female candidate, Gretchen Whitmer; Abdul El-Sayed, a Muslim American (who called himself a 215-lb “middle finger” to Donald Trump), and Shri Thanedar, an Indian-born entrepreneur. Gretchen Whitmer won the nomination, and will be facing down long-time Michigan politico Bill Schuette (also known in Michigan as “Shady Schuette”) for governor. Unfortunately the post-election was marred by an unpleasant incident when a Virginia Senate candidate with past ties to the far right unleashed an uncalled-for and completely ignorant Twitter slur against Abdul El-Sayed (say what? don’t you have enough to fight about in Virginia? stay in your own lane and STFU. And while we’re at it, just quit with Twitter. Jesus. We get enough of that from 45).

Corey Steward Tweet Calls Muslim Candidate Abdul El-Sayed “ISIS Commie” (Washington Times) Gretchen Whitmer did not let this stand, however, and responded:

No word yet on whether Whitmer will take the advice of many of her constituents and ask El-Sayed, who was stridently endorsed by Bernie Sanders, to be her pick for Assistant Governor.

good lord that’s a lot to remember.

My July goals were:

1) Improve my housecleaning process via the Clean Mama protocol (blogged about here);
2) Dry weekdays;
3) Target 10,000 steps a day;
4) Run 50 miles;
5) Participate in Plastic Free July.

I’m pleased with my results. I fell off a bit with the cleaning at the end of the month, but liked the overall process (and my new tools) so much that I’ll be carrying that goal over into August. Dry weekdays did NOT happen and I have no intent of trying to continue that 😉 But I hit both fitness goals, restarted Weight Watchers, and feel like I’m on a good trend of keeping my eating clean and my body moving.

Plastic Free July was one of my favorite initiatives and I’m proud of my progress. If you want to read more about the initiative, some tips to help, and a great article about WHY this is necessary, here are some links for you to check out:

I wanted to be efficient in my targeting; I very rarely use plastic single-use bottles, as I have a great reusable travel coffee cup (link to buy here) and several stainless steel and glass water bottles at home that I use constantly, so I knew I didn’t need to improve much there. However, it’s almost impossible for me to avoid plastic packaging at the grocery store, so I sat down and thought about it, and targeted four areas that I knew I could improve.
1) grocery bags – I used ZERO new plastic grocery bags in July. I either remembered my reusable bags, or I used paper bags if I forgot them in the car or at home. As a result, I’ve significantly dwindled my stockpile (which I reuse for cleaning the litter box and lining wastebaskets).
2) single use silverware – I made a great investment with bamboo utensils (link to buy here).  They’re washable, lightweight, I can carry them in my purse or lunchbox or work tote, and where I used to use a plastic fork or spoon almost every day at work to eat my breakfast or lunch, in the month of July I only ended up using ONE plastic knife (before the bamboo set arrived and I needed to slice a banana into my oatmeal at work).
3) ziploc bags – I bought no new ziploc bags and instead washed and reused old ones that come with my Blue Apron boxes for food storage. I used fabric (link to buy here) or washable, reusable bags from Grove Collaborative (link to buy here) for my sandwiches and snacks and smaller food storage.
4) I used NO plastic straws in July. I eschewed straws altogether, in fact, although my bamboo utensil kit comes with a straw and a tiny straw cleaning brush. My new boss at work (whom I love and who resembles Judy Greer and whom I shall now likely call Judy on the blog) recommended glass straws that she purchased at the Ann Arbor Art Fair from Strawesome (link here). I might get one of these as well as she said they’re washable, have a great “mouth feel” and are a nice gift idea.

Flush with my July success, and with the intent to continue the strides I made, here are my August goals:
1) Continue with Clean Mama and Plastic-Free successes from July; carryover.
2) Run 50 miles &  begin training for October half-marathon.
3) 10,000 steps a day;
4) Track food with Weight Watchers every day;
5) Attend Book Club that I’ve been invited to but haven’t made yet;
6) Try out the new yoga studio downtown with the eye to expand my fitness regimen beyond just running.

check in part 2 – home care

My house has never been what I would call immaculate (I’m a full-time working mom with 2 cats, yo) but when I was getting my paralegal cert, housekeeping took a decided back-back-backseat. For years my cleaning routine has been to haul out a plastic bucket that originally was purchased holding 20lbs of kitty litter (clean of course) – it  was full of old rags, plastic cups, rubber gloves, and a welter of half-used chemical cleaning supplies. I would also push a Kenmore around that weighed as much as I did, but which I hated to use because it was very heavy and bulky, so vacuuming was never as frequent as it should have been.

Recently, though, I discovered an Instagram account called Clean Mama and was inspired to try her protocol for a month. I encourage you to check out her blog and Insta – I won’t reinvent the wheel by explaining it ALL in detail, but essentially she suggests breaking up cleaning tasks by doing a handful of certain quick things every day – decluttering, wiping down counters, making beds, etc. – and a larger task every weekday.

I invested in several new purchases to facilitate this process, and have some recommendations from my “cleaning makeover”!

Monday is wiping down all bathrooms. I recycled the old kitty litter bucket and replaced it with this caddy. I also chucked my toilet brushes once I’d used up the last of my cleaner and now use the disposable Clorox system in all of my bathrooms. I use old wash cloths that have become too ratty for personal care use as rags – I have many of them, so can use one clean one for wiping down toilets, one for sinks, one for countertops, etc in each bathroom – they wash up in hot water on the Sanitize setting. I’m still using up some old spray disinfectant, but in a happy coincidence, Grove Collaborative advertised on a podcast I listen to (Thinking Sideways) and I got a free kit of Mrs. Meyer’s cleaning supplies with a $20 purchase. (HUGE BONUS – Mrs. Meyer’s is also cruelty free!!) Grove also threw in some free gifts with my order and I’ve been super thrilled with everything. I plan on transitioning fully to these more environmentally friendly options as I use up my old supplies!

Tuesday is dusting day. Luckily my daughter enjoys dusting so she was happy to help me out with this – especially when I showed her this new Full Circle microfiber and bamboo duster (the microfiber is removable, washable, and replaceable!). I also invested in a set of microfiber cloths from Amazon.

Wednesday is vacuuming and although the Kenmore was not cheap, and works great, I bought myself a Shark on the recommendation of many people in my life. Not to be melodramatic – but it has CHANGED MY LIFE (lol). It is lightweight, super suction, quick, maneuverable, with a dust cup that I can empty and rinsable filters and I LOVE IT.

Thursday is the day for washing floors which I can tell you apart from using a wet pad Swiffer, rarely occurred at my house before this protocol. Not anymore. I invested in both an O-Cedar EasyWring mop and bucket AND a O-Cedar refillable spray mop – with the O-Cedar I can use my own solution and I don’t have to buy their chemicals (ahem Swiffer). For mopping I use the solution of hot water and white vinegar that Clean Mama recommends, with drops of essential oils – lately I love a mojito-esque combo of lime and spearmint. I plan on doing a full mop with the O-Cedar at least once a month or as needed, and using the wet jet for other weeks or when I’m short on time.

Friday is a catch-all day on the schedule; Saturday is for washing sheets and towels – which I tend to do throughout the week with the rest of my laundry – Sunday is an “off” day to relax so I end up with three days without chores except for larger tasks or things I didn’t get to throughout the week. Leaving me free to do my outside yardwork, go for a run, or just lay on the couch and watch Netflix!

Although I’m usually tired when I get home from work, I’ve been pretty successful at following this. For years I felt resentful that I had to spend hours of my precious 2 days off a week cleaning. Especially after I got divorced, when I also had to take on all the outside yard and garden work too! Dividing the chores this way – and doing a few bigger chores monthly, like washing rugs & quilts, cleaning filters and appliances, etc – has been  efficient & manageable for a working person. Most tasks (except maybe mopping) take under a half-hour to finish. My house is definitely cleaner and feels / smells / looks better. Clean Mama also has printable checklists and schedules – I print out the monthly schedule and put it on my fridge and add other things that I need to do (such as clean the litterboxes) – and I check them off as I do them so it’s easy for me to keep track of what’s been done, how often, and if something hasn’t been done, I can get to it on one of the “off” days. I also feel pleased that I have new tools that are easier on me and on the environment – so it’s a win-win-win! I look forward to continuing to transition my cleaning supplies over to more gentle alternatives.

check in part 1.2 – what i’m buying (cruelty-free personal care edition cont.)

Greetings friends and loved ones – I hope your July is unspooling in a series of golden green days full of sunshine, good food and better memories.

As promised, here is Part 1.2 of my cruelty-free personal care rundown. If you missed Part 1.1, you might want to backtrack to catch up on the whys and wherefores.

First, obligatory photograph – this time of the little baby visitor I have sleeping in the welter of untrimmed shrubbery in my backyard. I’m not mad. ❤

Whilst several personal care items were relatively easy to swap for cruelty-free brands, some are still a work in progress. Top on the list:

DeodorantTom’s of Maine lavender is what I’ve been using. Look, it does the job, the price point is good, it glides on and doesn’t leave white marks. The problem is that after years of using deodorant and becoming accustomed to my underarms smelling strongly of tropical orchid or some other intense fragrance, to suddenly find myself smelling NOT perfumey is jarring. I don’t smell bad – it works – but I can smell myself more often, if that makes sense, and I’m not used to that. I don’t want to be sitting in a meeting and smell my own personhood – I want to smell tropical orchid. So this has been a work in progress. I also have a stick of Schmidt’s Ylang-Ylang and Calendula waiting to be tried as I’ve read good things about it although it’s more expensive.

Toothpaste – See above. After years of becoming accustomed to overpowering mint pastes and mouthwashes, the product I went with first has taken some getting used to. Desert Essence Tea Tree & Neem doesn’t taste sweet – in fact I found the flavor kind of gross until I got used to it. And it doesn’t leave my breath super minty either. But I have found that the product works much better relative to plaque and tartar than any drugstore brand – my teeth feel cleaner and smoother after every use. I also plan on trying other flavors of this and maybe also a Tom’s of Maine to compare and contrast.

check in part 1.1 – what i’m buying (cruelty-free personal care edition)

My summer has thus far been delightful in some very typical summer ways – a trip up north, running, doing yardwork – and I thought I’d check in to put to print some of the things I’ve been thinking and doing. This will be a multi-part series – the first two, what I’m buying parts 1.1 and 1.2 (personal care) and 2 (home products), will review some of my major purchases this year to support some of the initiatives I’ve undertaken. The third, what I’m absorbing, will go over what I’ve been reading, watching, and listening to – books, shows, magazines, and podcasts. And the last, what I’m doing, will lend some accountability to some activities that I’ve prioritized this summer.

Earlier this year, I made the decision to move away from cosmetic and personal care products sold by companies that test on animals. This was a personal decision that reflects my values and my need to make small, beneficial changes for the long term sustainability of my community and world. I feel that animal testing on cosmetics is completely unnecessary and unethical and that the United States is woefully behind many other countries (including Japan and those in Europe) in moving away from animal testing. I won’t go into a lot of detail, but there’s an absolutely wonderful site called Cruelty Free Kitty that provides great information on why this is important, what we as consumers and animal advocates can do, and, awesomely, a WONDERFUL list of products and brands that offer cruelty free beauty options. I’m almost off my soapbox and into the products I’m trying, but one last thought – if we can buy such great products that DON’T test on animals, why buy drugstore brands that DO? There’s no reason for it.

My switch has been slow and I’m still in heavy experimentation mode – my goal was to use up what I’d already bought from drugstores first, so as not to waste anything.  So this isn’t an exhaustive list of what I will eventually be purchasing – more updates to come.

Eyeliner, shampoo and hairspray, and hair color were my first purchases and super easy:

Eyeliner – I’d been a Revlon or Loreal girl but found a great alternative with Pacificathis eye pencil. I use the brown – it has a nice color and consistency. It might not last as long as some of the drugstore brands, but I end up reapplying after my lunchtime workout, anyway, so works a charm. Available on Amazon and budget-friendly.

Shampoo – I am a shampoo-every-day kind of girl despite many stylists trying to convince me that this is unnecessary and damaging to my hair. Sorry not sorry.  Even with dry shampoo I end up looking like a greaseball. I loved Dove for its price point and clean scent, but have moved to Acure. This was easy – I already knew and trusted the brand as I use it for facial scrub and other skin care and it’s available at Target. More expensive than drugstore brands but less, I think, than Paul Mitchell or Nexxus or other top-shelf store brands.

Hairspray – This was a tough one for me. Again, I was a Dove girl as I liked the clean scent…I’m trying two replacement options (one in my gym bag and one at home) and am not super thrilled with either for different reasons.  – Giovanni L.A. Hold and Aveda‘s Control Force. Both of these WAAY more than I normally would pay for hairspray and I don’t love either. Need to do more work to find a product I’m all-around content with the way I was with Dove.

Hair Color – I’ve been really pleased with Madison Reed. I’ve used salon color (too expensive and time consuming), box color (poor quality) and another mail order coloring service and Madison Reed is by far the best. High quality, long lasting, cruelty free and it doesn’t have the same ammonia reek that other box kits do – leaves my hair really soft.

Next time I’ll review some of the products that I’ve had a more difficult time replacing – deodorant and toothpaste high on the list. Until then, enjoy your summer – xo friends.

getting out of my own way

B & I had a great visit in northside Iowa City. In my estimation, he picked the perfect neighborhood to live in, and we spent our two days together enjoying it. The sun was shining and the weather was milder than Michigan; we ran down around the University of Iowa campus, ate cheeseburgers at George’s (dive bar extraordinaire) and browsed at the Haunted Bookshop where I finally spotted the other resident cat (I had to go both days).

We finally watched one of the Oscar-nominated films (I don’t think either of us had seen any of them yet) – Three Billboards. Although the casting was wonderful, the movie itself perplexed and annoyed both of us. Spoiler Alert –> Couldn’t they have just focused on the ensemble cast and the themes of grief and vengeance and foregone the Molotov cocktails and the throwing of people out of windows?

It was a short visit (made shorter by Daylight Savings) and all too soon I was back in my car for the six hour journey home. I picked an Audible unabridged version of Ann Rule’s “The Stranger Beside Me” (about her relationship with notorious serial killer Ted Bundy). Unfortunately, this book is leaving me perplexed and annoyed as well, and not just because Ted Bundy was an evil maniac. It’s making me feel as though maybe I’m just an overly critical consumer of entertainment. I’m not quite done with it yet, so I will refrain from sharing my feelings about it until I am.

Back home; I am plunged into preparations for Book Fair and fighting a sore throat and rampant ennui. I feel woefully inadequate for the tasks ahead of me in the next week and a half and I am trying to focus on a passage I read in the Crosswick Journals by Madeline L’Engle (a battered three-volume set that I picked up for a song at the aforementioned Haunted Bookshop, and which is filled with more wonderful quotes and musings than I can possibly begin to digest – and while I’m at it allow me to confess one additional thing that may prove my point about being overly critical – I am deeply suspicious of the new movie version of “A Wrinkle In Time” – deeply – and not just because it is packed with Oprah and “big names” – although that might be part of it):

“A winter ago I was asked by the Children’s Book Council to write a story, and agreed to do so. I was telling Tallis about it, and said, “I’m really very nervous about this.” He looked at me contemptuously: “You don’t think you’re going to have anything to do with it, do you?” “No,” I retorted, “but I could get in the way.”

The side hustle is done! and I am waiting for my grades on my last exam and appellate brief before I start celebrating! I’m happy to have some free time to do some other things that I am passionate about (including blogging). My house is still full of love, Miss L, cats, unfolded laundry, stacks of library books and incomplete jigsaw puzzles, bags of yarn. There are some new essential oil additions and a couple of new occupants in Miss L’s aquarium. The even-toed ungulates still come to raid the birdfeeders and there is still a hole in my ceiling – and I’m still a happy girl. B, my summer friend, is now my long-distance winter friend and I will be traveling back to Iowa City to see him in March for a long weekend.

I’m excited to start ramping up my running miles (I’m hanging in there at about 10 a week) and get started on some new knitting projects. A sweater is still a goal for this year but I really feel that I need a new pair of Jaywalker socks for myself as a present for getting my certificate. And this little sloth on Craftsy caught my girl’s eye, so I will tackle that first, too. After those minor distractions, I will start researching patterns and yarn for my sweater.

I’ll be back soon with some updates on what I’ve been reading, a race recap of the Betsie Bay Frozen 5k, and another major resolution that I’ll be tackling in 2018. I hope you’ve been well.

This is it – this is the year.

This is the year I get my paralegal certificate.

This is the year that I lose that extra 10 pounds that’s been bumming me out.

This is the year that I run my 5th half marathon and don’t give a single fuck if I PR or if I’m slow.

This is the year I meet my mileage AND my book reading goals.

Happy 2018! Even though I didn’t take much time off work, I still managed to enjoy a really nice holiday season – highlights included a couple of days that L & I spent with my parents in the frozen northlands and my summer friend B being home for a whole week.

It was a nice mix of family time and grownup time. The three of us went to the Detroit Institute of Art and had filet mignon on New Year’s Eve together; separately, L & I did puzzles and spent days in jammies and B & I visited the Motown Museum & had a great lunch at Social Kitchen and Bar in Birmingham (the atmosphere was a little busy and hipster for me; but the food was great – highly recommend the egg sandwich and the Brussels sprouts). He and I also found time to visit our fave local, Lucy & the Wolf in Northville (everything is good here and the service is absolutely top notch), and I felt a little nostalgic for the summer nights that would find us there eating devilled eggs and then wandering down to the live music in the square.

Now everything is encased in ice, as the first week of 2018 has followed in the footsteps of past years with a deep freeze. Even though my cats live indoors and never have to put their soft paws in a snowbank, they seem to be as annoyed and drained as us humans – Sarge has barely gotten out of his cat bed since New Year’s. Everyone at work looks glassy and zombie-like. We all have road salt on our shoes and pants and although I’ve managed to shower and put on clean clothes every day, that’s about all the extent of the energy I can muster for self-improvement.

I did, however, get on the work treadmill today for my first run of 2018 and it felt great. I am recommitting to mileage this year and one of my goals is a half-marathon. I finally feel as though I’m fully healed from the stress fracture that’s plagued me for the past couple of years (!) and am slowly building my base again, even if it’s just on the treadmill right now.

I had a spotty performance with Weight Watchers over the holiday. I had some really excellent days and then I had some days where I wanted B’s Elvis birthday cake and handfuls of salted mixed nuts and pizza and big goblets of wine. I didn’t lose any weight, but I didn’t gain any, either, and I feel like I’ve started January strongly.
I should also add that one of my other big 2018 resolutions is taking place right now. Last year, I read an article about “Dry January” (mostly a UK thing currently, I think; about 3 million people over there participate) and decided to do it. I felt so good after a month of no alcohol that I’ve decided to make this an annual tradition.

My side hustle starts up again on Monday and if all goes well, I’ll be certified by the end of February. Not much knitting to report except Kit’s Mitts (a Christmas gift for a bestie – technically not finished before Christmas but not my fault – Sarge has a habit of digging into my knitting bag after I’ve gone to bed and dragging my knitting projects around the house, winding the yarn around chairs and tables, then up the stairs, needles and all, and he unraveled them TWICE) which I didn’t even Ravel because I didn’t take a picture of them before they were bundled into an envelope and mailed. I have a little mini-sock on the needles as a test for some Christmas ornaments / gifts for next year and a pair of wool mittens. I have been wearing the wool mittens I knitted last year quite a bit and I even wore them to snowblow and I am thrilled to report that they are WARM!! So I’m making more for the mitten basket.

And that’s about the sum of my New Year update. Happy 2018 to all and sundry and stay warm out there.

So, a few observations have crept up on me this fall / early winter.

I got on the scale a week or so ago and saw numbers that I’d never seen.
I went to the doctor for commonplace prescription refill and my weight & triglycerides were a topic of discussion.
I put on a dress for a presentation to Japanese auditors last week and literally felt like I’d been zipped into a corset all day – I couldn’t breathe. (It’s worth noting that this is a sleeveless tweed that I used to wear over long-sleeved t-shirts with boots because it was 2 sizes too big.)
We took a photo with aforementioned Japanese auditors at dinner and my face was like a round pale moon floating over my dish of eggplant parm.

I try to be health conscious. I rarely eat fast food, I exercise 3-4 days a week, I’m active, I do my own yardwork and housework. I run, I cook at home, I eat whole foods.

Oh, I gained the Freshman 15 (or 20) and I’ve gone through periods of my life where my weight has fluctuated. It’s always resolved itself, though, with a few very minor tweaks. And I’ve always been able to throw down on a pizza or a pumpkin pie with gusto and not feel or see any real effects.
Several years ago, during my ramp-up into regular running, and then during my divorce a year or so later, weight just melted off me and wouldn’t stay on. I got too thin, then bounced back to a healthy, happy weight, and from there it’s just been a gradual climb.

And this year the struggle has been real to even stay within the upper range of that healthy weight, and in the last six months, I have to admit that it’s gotten away from me.
I know that some of it is the natural aging process combined with hormone issues related to my contraceptive of choice, but everything I’ve tried – counting calories on my own, increasing exercise, limiting sugar – has not worked.

I pride myself on not being one to sit on my heels and wait for things to get worse, so, in an effort to stall the gradual but steady weight gain, I gave myself a firm talking-to. If something isn’t working, you have to figure out something that DOES, so – four days ago – I signed up for a month of Weight Watchers.

It might be rash to do this immediately before the holidays but once my mind is set, I don’t want to wait and dig myself deeper into a hole. I find it interesting that a few years ago, I tried to sign up for WW and couldn’t – they considered me already at or below my ideal healthy weight. My, how times have changed.

So I enrolled in the new Freestyle program and four days in, I’m finding it both easy / convenient and hellish at the same time. I love that I can track on my iPhone app, and that it connects to my Garmin to log my steps and workouts and give me activity points. I love that there are tons of zero-point foods so I don’t feel hungry, exactly (I just feel angry). I love that I have weekly points and rollover points so I can allocate treat meals or treat days or snacks and know that it will come out in the weekly wash, good days and less good days.
I know that it will get easier and I will feel less hateful and depressed. But right now I am in the first throes of deprivation, full of lean protein and vegetables and sadly lacking in carbs, alcohol, and sugar.
